Picky Eaters and Problem Feeders
What is a feeding difficulty?
A feeding difficulty is when a child is experiencing problems with aspects or all areas of eating and drinking. Feeding difficulties can cause health complications, and place stress and strain on the family.
When should I make an appointment?
There are many signs that a child is struggling with feeding, here are a few indicators for referral:
If the child shows any of the following:
- Difficulty with transition onto purees or solids
- Food refusal
- Food aversion especially to specific textures or nutritional subgroup
- Restricted range of foods being eaten
- Anxiety around food and mealtimes
- Chocking, coughing or gagging during meals or with a particular type of food/drink
- Difficulty chewing food
- Losing weight / Inappropriate growth
Who to see:
We have a team of professionals who work together to provide a holistic service for children. Our team consists of Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapist and Psychologists. Additionally, we liaise closely with other health professionals and the wider team involved with the child.
How does it work?
We are able to provide both individual and/or group input for children with feeding difficulties after an initial assessment and discussion with the parents to determine a child’s needs and what works best for the family. Our group sessions usually run for approximate 1-1&1/2 hours, once a week for 10 weeks.
We involve the family, the child and the GP in our intervention, as feeding is a family experience. Feeding and mealtimes are cultural, a time for sharing, bonding and connecting, as well as ensuring nutritional intake. We recognise that feeding and mealtimes can be very emotional and stressful – having a huge daily impact on a family.
It is important to refresh ourselves that feeding/eating is a developmental skill. We will teach a child in a step by step process from where they are having difficulty.
The other essential thing for you to know is that we have FUN, we PLAY and engage the child at their level to ensure success.
